What do you mean by Lip Augmentation?

Lip augmentation is a newly introduced cosmetic technique to get smooth and fuller lips by reducing fine lines around the mouth. It can be attained either by using injectable fillers, implants or through surgeries. This technique doesn’t only work to enhance appearance but is good in ant-aging procedure also. There are different types of injectables that can be used in Lip augmentation

Who is a more suitable Candidate?

Healthy, pessimist, non-smokers and strong people are the most suitable candidates for this procedure. People with thin lips, fine lines around the mouth and lip asymmetry are best to get benefits from lip augmentation.

What are pre-operative considerations?

A skin allergy test is always suggested to avoid any further problem with certain filler materials. Lip augmentation cannot be a good choice for patients with serious allergy history, or those who are allergic to lidocaine. In case of an active infection like herpes outbreak, surgery may be postponed. Patients are required to inform their surgeon about any medication or herbal supplement they are taking (if any).

What are post-operative care tips?

Incisions made for the procedure are very tiny and didn’t take too much time in healing. No special wound care is required after this surgical treatment. Intermittent application of a cold pack can be useful option against swelling and bruising.

What is the approximate recovery time?

Lip augmentation is considered as a ‘’ lunch time’’ procedure due to its simple application and short duration. It can cause some swelling which may last for a period of one week.

What risks are involved?

Bleeding, migration/extrusion of the implant, asymmetry, allergic reactions like prolonged redness, swelling, itching and firmness on the infection site are the possible risks in lip augmentation procedure.

Follow some precautions to get rid of above stated possible risks, consider only a skilled dermatologist and avoid liquid silicone injections because they are illegal in many countries including U.S for its high risk factors.

How much it costs?

Most of the injectable fillers cost $300-$1000 per session. However, fat transfer is a bit expensive ranging from $1500-$5000 depending on its techniques, material and geographical areas.

What is the complementary procedure?

Usually lip augmentation is performed with some complementary procedure for best results. In serious operations like ‘’face lift’’, lip augmentation is likely to be the last step.

How it will be performed?

Different beneficial and impactful techniques are available today for lip augmentation with their own pros and cons. First of them is the injection method, in which a filler of liquid/gel consistency material is injected on the vermillion border and underneath the skin. Second choice is surgical; incisions are made in all sides of mouth to implant a flexible biocompatible solid implant. There is another option for lip augmentation which avoids these implants and fillers, by using a V shaped incision inside the mouth which then suture into a ‘y’. This process results in an outward rolled lip, by creating a subtle fuller looking lips.
